Le QLA est un concours scientifique et éducatif qui a lieu tous les trois ans. Il se tient simultanément aux niveaux national et international. Son objectif est de sensibiliser aux enjeux liés à la préservation de la biodiversité dans les carrières et d’identifier de nouvelles façons de la valoriser.
Des projets en matière de mise en valeur et de préservation de la biodiversité sont actuellement menés dans nos carrières dans le monde entier. En 2022, dans le cadre du concours international, nous décernerons des prix allant jusqu'à 30 000 €.

Heidelberg Materials and more than 100 guests celebrated the seven winning teams of the fifth edition of the Quarry Life Award in Brussels. Building on the award, Heidelberg Materials develops best practices for quarry management which are then applied on a global scale, amongst others supporting the company’s contribution to the EU restoration agenda.

We are going to follow the story of the Long-winged buzzard pair, who nests at the Aït Baha quarry. This year it was successful, and two chicks hatched and fledged. On 17 June 2022, the two young raptors are still around the nest, waiting for a careless lizard or a small rodent that wanders away from its burrow.

On April 13 and 27, 2022, new surprise, a Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) pair nests on the western cliffs in the quarry, not so far from the Long-legged Buzzard's active nest. Despite many hours of research and observation, we were not able to discover the nest.

After lifting multiple rocks in the quarry, we were so delighted to find three scorpion species.

After two weeks, the North African buzzard parents are still incubating. A parent remained deep in the nest within the cliff and there was no sign of any chicks yet. The second parent perched at various vantage points within a few metres of the nest. With a little luck, the chicks will appear at the end of April. The suspense still remains!
